Live Baccarat Rules

The Basics

Baccarat is a very simple game to learn. It is played with eight decks of cards that have been shuffled into a shoe. The game features just two positions, Player and Banker, and you need to bet on which position will be closer to nine at the end of a round.

This means that the game features just three basic bets, Player, Banker and Tie. However, there are also a number of side bets that can be extremely lucrative.

In Baccarat, the number cards 2 to 10 are worth their face value, Aces are worth 1 and the face cards (Jack, Queen and King) are all worth ten. When calculating the value of a hand, if it is worth more than 10 then 10 is subtracted from the total, e.g. a hand of 15 is worth 5.

How a Round Works

At the start of a round, you need to place your bet on the Player, Banker or Tie position as well as any side bets that you wish to place. After the bets have been placed, the dealer will deal two face up cards to each of the positions.

In some situations, a third card may be dealt to either of the hand positions. A hand is known as a ‘Natural’ if it is worth 8 or 9 and no further card will be dealt to it. However, if the Player hand is worth 5 or less then it receives a third card. If the Player hand does not receive a third card then the Banker hand will receive a third card if it is worth 5 or less but will not receive a third card if it is worth 6 or more.

If the Player hand has received a third card then the following rules govern the Banker hand. If the Banker hand is worth 2 or less then it receives a third card. If the Banker hand is worth 3 then it receives a third card as long as the Player’s third card was not an 8. If the Banker hand is worth 5 then the Banker will receive a third card if the Player’s third card was a 4, 5, 6 or 7. If the Banker hand is worth 6 then it will receive a third card if Player’s third card was a 6 or 7. The Banker will not receive a third card if the position has a total of 7 or higher.

Once all cards have been dealt then you are paid for any winning bets.

Payouts

The Player bet pays at 1:1, the Banker bet pays 0.95:1, and the Tie bet pays 8:1.

Features and Side Bets

Roadmaps

Many players like to use roadmap scorecards to keep track of the game. Live Baccarat features the Bead Road, Big Road, Small Road, Big Eye Road and Cockroach Road scorecards, each of which can help track different aspects of the game.

Side Bets

Baccarat offers a number of side bets, the Player Pair, Banker Pair, Either Pair, Perfect Pairs, Big and Small. Most of these bets relate to the first two cards dealt to the player or dealer. The Player, Banker and Either Pair bets are on whether the first two cards dealt will form a pair in one of the positions. The Banker and Player Pair pay 11:1 while the either Pair pays 5:1. The Perfect Pairs bet pays if the first two Player or Banker cards form a pair of the same suit (such as two 6 of Clubs) and it pays 25:1. The Big bet pays out if the total number of cards dealt between the Player and Banker is 5 or 6 and it pays 0.54:1. The Small bet pays out if the total number of cards dealt is 4 and it pays 1.5:1.
